To celebrate the five hundred years since the birth of Cosimo I de 'Medici, the first Grand Duke of Tuscany, Florence organizes some important events, including this exhibition in the Uffizi. The Lanzi (or Lanzichenecchi) are the historical Medici guard, a militia founded in the mid-sixteenth century and remained in activity until the eighteenth century. One hundred chosen armigers who in the Grand-ducal period constituted the troop used to defend the prince; the "German Guard" which gave its name to the Loggia (dei Lanzi, in fact) which hosted them in Florence for some time and which today is one of the artistic attractions of Piazza della Signoria. The guardhouse - made up of professionals in the art of war mostly from Germany, Austria and the Netherlands - left important traces in the history and life of the city.
