In a selection of seventy exemplary works from public and private collections in Europe and the United States, the exhibition offers a perspective on the changing representation of our feelings in modern Europe. From Durer to La Tour and Greuze, the first section shows the role of aesthetic treatises in the portrayal of emotions: the Iconologia (1593) by Cesare Ripa and the Méthode (1698) by Charles Lebrun offered painters and sculptors “recipes" that they could use to convey the affective state of their figures. In the 19th century, representation changed as a result of new events and fields of knowledge, from the invention of photography to psychiatry. The caricatures of Boilly and the naturalism of Courbet gradually gave way to symbolism and a focus on interiority. This brought about a profound change: in the 20th century, emotion was not so much represented as provoked. It became sensation. This is what the last part of the exhibition will show by bringing together major artists from the period such as Dali, Picasso and Fautrier. Beyond the richness of the subject, still largely virgin territory for art history, and the quality of the works illustrating it, the exhibition reveals the slow process whereby, starting in the 15th century, the modern Western psyche was shaped.
Subject Headings: Eastern and Western European Art ; Western Art -- France ; Germany ; Spain -- 1800-1900 ; 1900-1945 -- Painting --
