Giambattista Piranesi (Mogliano Veneto, 1720 - Rome, 1778) is considered the last great exponent of Venetian engraving of the eighteenth century. His activity has influenced not only architects, but also set designers, painters, and writers. As part of the studies launched on the occasion of the three hundred years of his birth, the volume publishes the corpus of Piranesian engravings present in the permanent collections of the Civic Museums of Bassano del Grappa, which includes some of the most famous views of Rome, to which are added the tomes of Roman Antiquities, and the famous series of Prisons of invention. A rich catalog, completed by a documentary appendix and an epistolary selection which, thanks to the prestigious contributions received, leads to an in-depth knowledge of Piranesi and his magnificently dreamlike but at the same time powerfully concrete work, capable of striking the imagination of observers, a time like today.
