The exhibition offers a rereading of the work of the great defender of “Art Brut”. Although he paradoxically refused the dominant culture, schools, currents and techniques taught, his work occupies a major place in the artistic landscape of the second half of the 20th century. The diversity of the exhibition bears witness to the inexhaustible creativity of this prolific artist (1901-1985) who knew how to evolve his style throughout his life. Setting up the non-knowledge as a principle to create a singular work, punctuated by successive series, Jean Dubuffet never ceased to develop new research in bold "tones”, always disconcerting. Insubordinate to the standards in force, “the true art”, according to him, “is always where one does not wait for it. Where no one thinks of it or pronounces its name". With more than ten thousand works listed in the catalogue raisonne, the polymorphous work of Jean Dubuffet covers six decades of the twentieth century. In order to give an account of all aspects of his creation, the exhibition presented at the Fondation Pierre Gianadda is structured around key moments, alternating masterpieces of his painting with major groups of works on paper (drawings and gouaches), presented in chronological order.
