At the center of Ann Bottcher's artistic practice we find the pine-tree. In her work, Bottcher explores and maps Nordic nature and historical forms of reflection. How, for example, has the pine-tree served as a symbol for the formation of territorial claims or national identities? With reference to a romantic tradition and artists such as Marcus Larson and Carl Fredrik Hill, Bottcher has an interest in how aesthetic and political projections characterize the notion of nature. The work is similar to that of a historian, but where folklore, Nazi ideology, ethnology, sanatoriums and forest death are reproduced through drawings and craft. The exhibition at Bonniers Konsthall is Ann Bottcher’s first comprehensive exhibition, which also includes public works so as to give a thorough presentation of one of Sweden’s most important artists. An extensive catalog is also produced for the exhibition. Ann Bottcher, born in Bruzaholm, studied at Konstfack, Stockholm and the Art Academy in Malmo. Today she lives and works in Malmo.
