Luxurious objects that emerged in aristocratic and cultivated circles in northern Italy, the illuminated fifteenth-century tarots have been better preserved than ordinary printed tarots. The quality of execution, richness of color and embossed gold backgrounds make them unique works, both the playing cards and the miniatures. Dominated by the cards painted by Bonifacio Bembo and his workshop for the court of Milan, illuminated tarots were also produced for other courts, including Ferrara and Florence. Organized around the card of the Chariot and its "sisters", two cards clearly from the same deck exceptionally loaned by the National Museum of Warsaw, the exhibition also presents precious Milanese and Florentine tarots from the Louvre, the National Library of France and the Morgan Library and Museum in New York. The illuminated tarots bring details essential to understanding Italian painting of the fifteenth century, shedding light on the historical, artistic and intellectual context.
