The war, the first "great" world war, had transformed him, Ottone Rosai, and a multitude of boys of his age into full-grown men, definitely adults, despite his physical appearance and age, young, now only for the registry office . In the case of him, the tall daring man who, before being drafted and leaving for the front, had earned a reputation as a hooligan in the "diladdarno" Florence, the behavioral change, originating from that age-old conflict, had not seemed so evident to most. . Although the war, lived as a protagonist, had profoundly marked him, he had nevertheless not changed the distinctive characteristics of his nature, where the passions, disturbances and anxieties of all time continued to reside. He had become a man quickly, Rosai, like a generation. The times of stunts, fist fights and scuffles, on the other hand, have long since vanished. Between 1918 and 1919 he had resumed painting occasionally: some paintings of a late Futurist habit (Summer Follies, no.1 in cat.) And, above all, small - in size - still lifes: results in which it is already possible to appreciate artisan refinements in the doughs and some chromatic shades with an ancient flavor. Now the friendship, the comfort, the encouragement of Soffici, his favorite interlocutor, are basic to him: "The advice was never too many and more than once, without revealing it to anyone, starting from Florence around three in the morning, that is after being in the company of intelligent men, but lacking in humanity, I went to visit my teacher at Poggio a Caiano ... In that brilliant forge I spent the best days of my youth. Most of the time, having entered sad and disappointed, I would come out light until I felt tempted to fly. Each of those pushes has been worth to give me the possibilities, albeit minimal, that today I feel I have. " Coinciding with a bond experienced by mutual affection, shared orders and common orientations, it is not difficult, among other things, to glimpse the beginning of that kind of modernity that rises, going back to the lessons of Cimabue, Giotto and Duccio di Buoninsegna, to find finally, in Masaccio's realism - at least for Rosai - a more palpitating artistic lineage. that today I feel I have.
