Becoming Gustav Metzger: Uncovering the Early Years, 1945-59 accompanies the first museum exhibition to exclusively examine the little-known formative years of refugee artist and activist Gustav Metzger prior to the development of his later, radical Auto-Destructive practice. Featuring illustrated essays as well as previously unpublished material, it provides an opportunity to study never-before-seen drawings and paintings- hidden from view for 45 years- which chart Metzger's artistic journey from figuration to abstraction, as well as to explore the impact of Bomberg's revolutionary teaching on the development of the artist's ethics and aesthetics. Distinguished contributors include Stephen Bann CBE, Mathieu Copeland, Dr. Elizabeth Fisher and Andrew Wilson.
