Between the end of the seventeenth century and the first half of the nineteenth century, Italy was the privileged destination of writers, artists, young gentlemen, members of the noble and cultured European society who, through the "great journey", could undertake an educational and formative path , a sign of a specific social status. The exhibition and the catalog want to play a double role: on the one hand, to provide the representation of a composite Italy, of poignant beauty (as it appeared to visitors, especially to the artists who represented it), such as to describe it in their representation as a sort of suspended place, of stratification of memory and knowledge, a freeze-frame of history; and on the other hand to present the documentation of the protagonists themselves who gave rise to the myth of the "beautiful country". The exhibition, curated by Fernando Mazzocca with Stefano Grandesso and Francesco Leone, presents the following sections: The cities of the Grand Tour, The charm of ancient ruins, Mediterranean Italy, Vesuvius, Travelers and collectors, Artists, Italian beauty, The Italian primacy between the ancient and the great modern masters, Sculpture. Copies and derivations from antiquity, modern sculpture, objects of art and luxury manufacturing.
Subject Headings: Eastern and Western European Art ; Western Art -- 1600-1800 ; 1800-1900 -- Painting ; Several Fine Arts Media (Western) --
