Gerd and Helga Plewig's collection of bark paintings from Northern Australia with works mainly from the 1950s to 1970s is currently considered the best such collection outside of Australia. It includes works from the Kimberley, Wadeye, Tiwi Islands, Arnhem Land and Groote Eylandt by artists such as Yirawala, Mawalan Marika and Mungurrawuy Yunupingu. Bark paintings are part of the art traditions of the Australian Aboriginal people up to the present day and are closely related to practices such as body painting, rock paintings and the manufacture and decoration of sacred and profane objects. It is a millennia-long tradition that European researchers and collectors have only been aware of since the early 19th century. Bark painting refers to the time of creation, which is subject to the present and which determines the future.
Subject Headings: Non-Western in a Western Style ; Oceanic Art ; Western Art -- Australia -- Post-1945 -- Painting -- Other Non-American Minority --
