Published on occasion of the three-part exhibition titled, Ways of Seeing: Three Takes on the Jack Shear Collection. Take One: Jack Shear, Take Two: Arlene Shechet, Take Three: Jarrett Earnest. Publisher's description: Published on the occasion of the exhibition Ways of Seeing: Three Takes on the Jack Shear Drawing Collection, this anthology is the first volume of a special two-part publication. It takes as its subject what contributor Nick Mauss calls the “singular fluency between drawing and writing.” Building on the exhibition’s themes of perception and personal vision, nine renowned writers were asked to reflect on drawings of their choosing from the expansive collection of Jack Shear—artist, curator, and President of the Ellsworth Kelly Foundation. The group of authors, comprising a fashion writer, an artist, an art historian, as well as poets and fiction writers, offer us poignant and insightful stories, poems, personal ruminations, and visual analyses of objects from across countries and centuries. The result is a unique marriage of visual art and literature that testifies to the uncontainable power of art to make meaning over and over and over again. Ways of Seeing is co-edited by The Drawing Center’s Chief Curator, Claire Gilman, and critic and writer Hilton Als. It consists of an introduction by Gilman, an essay by Als, and short texts including poems, stories, and visual analyses by contributors Jennifer Krasinski, Ben Marcus, Nick Mauss, Charlie Porter, George Saunders, Clare Sestanovich, Brenda Shaughnessy, Tracy K. Smith, and Craig Morgan Teicher. For Volume 2 (not yet published) see Worldwide W037888. It will be available for purchase in Fall 2022.
