Rediscovery of an outstanding illustrator and graphic artist of the New Objectivity and pioneer of feminist art Hanna Nagel's artistic focus is on drawing and printmaking. Like no other artist of her time, she dealt with the relationship between man and woman and the problematic living situation in the conflict between work and motherhood. Trained in Karlsruhe, her work is initially characterized by factual precision. With the move to Berlin, she distanced herself from the strict New Objective style of drawing. The often autobiographical works, executed with brush and pen in ink, become formally more complex and painterly, whereby the impression of these so-called “dark leaves” corresponds entirely to the narratively and symbolically charged themes chosen. The exhibition and catalog focus on works from the 1920s and early 1930s.
